From the Brandt Commission to the 2030 Agenda

Forty years ago, in September 1977, the Independent Commission on International Development Issues under the chairmanship of former Federal Chancellor Willy Brandt dared to formulate its vision for global and economic governance – a vision that remains highly pertinent today. To pay tribute to the Commission’s ground-breaking work, German Foreign Minister and GDL patron Sigmar Gabriel hosted a conference on 31 August 2017 entitled “From the Brandt Commission to the 2030 Agenda: 40 Years of Common Efforts for a Peaceful, Just and Sustainable World”.

The GDL led one of the conference’s panels, during which three GDL Members, Jasdeep Randhawa, Onur Eryüce and Sabrina Schulz, discussed their visionary ideas directly with Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel. It was a very lively session. The panel members introduced the idea of fostering social entrepreneurship through VR experiences, explored emerging city-to-city partnerships in global governance and took a closer look at the unsatisfactory results of present-day climate policy. Afterwards, the audience was invited to participate in a fishbowl discussion that was moderated by GDL Member Nicola Forster.

The panel was followed by a networking event, during which policymakers, experts and activists engaged in lively discussions with the conference participants, i.e. mainly young leaders from government, the private sector and civil society. The session was co-hosted by the GDL and the grassroots think-tank on European and foreign affairs, Polis180. Participants had the opportunity to share their ideas regarding, as well as receive input on, find co-workers for, and spread news about, their projects at an Idea Gallery.

Strong participation by the audience in the fishbowl discussion and at the Idea Gallery underlined the need for new, high-impact concepts, with a view to empowering advocacy and public engagement and tackling the challenges of today’s globalized world.
