GDL Members facilitated a workshop at the World Press Freedom Day
1 to 3 May 2019, Addis Ababa
As part of an event series created together with UNESCO and the Bosch Alumni Network, GDL Members Elizabeth Maloba and Patrick Mpedzisi facilitaed a workshop at 2019s World Press Freedom Day. Their interactive format on the safety of women journalists online was staged at the central symposium which took place from 1 to 3 May in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The main goal of the cooperation was to identify potential solutions to fight online harassment of journalists. It was part of a broader UNESCO initiative, countering gender-based harassment and threats against journalists. Kick-off for the event series was a workshop in Vienna in February 2019.
Since 1993, 3 May has been dedicated to press freedom and freedom of expression – freedoms indispensable for sustainable peace. The theme of 2019 was “Media for Democracy: Journalism and Elections in Times of Disinformation” which focused on the media and its role in national elections as well as peace and reconciliation processes. It also highlighted the challenges of disinformation and the safety of journalists. World Press Freedom Day draws attention to these issues and promotes the rights of journalists around the globe.
