Michael Horn is KPMG Indonesia’s Head of Restructuring Services and Head of ESG Advisory. With more than 30 years’ experience across Asia-Pacific, Europe and the US, he has held leadership roles in advisory/consulting, project and municipal finance, legal and credit/risk. He leads KPMG’s efforts to grow ESG advisory engagement in Indonesia on strategy, measurement/reporting, decarbonisation transition and social diversity, equity and inclusion.
Michael served as ASPAC Managing Director of an AAA-rated infrastructure lender, international law firm partner and Chief Risk Officer of Indonesia Infrastructure Finance, a World Bank/ADB-owned infrastructure lender. As consultant, speaker, trainer and writer, he has advised Indonesia on PPP investment policy, conducted UNESCAP infrastructure procurement training for the Cambodian Government, addressed transportation/mobility investment at APEC Bali and infrastructure’s contribution to development at UNESCAP Bangkok, and published thought leadership on drinking water investment, rail connectivity and airport development.
His restructuring experience spans the COVID-19 downturn, the global financial crisis, the Asian financial crisis, Japan’s Lost Decade, the 2003 Korean securitisation collapse and the 2014-2016 oil and gas downturn. He has supported the turnaround of a national airline, an aquaculture company, a state-owned agriculture company and others. His infrastructure experience includes drinking water, roads/tunnels/bridges, airports, accommodation, renewable energy and government policy advisory and legislative drafting. Michael’s ESG Advisory experience includes modern slavery investigation in plantations, energy transition to early retire coal-fired power plants, supply-chain audit and first-time corporate ESG strategy.
Michael has worked in Asia-Pacific for a substantial part of his career, including 15 years in Indonesia, with postings in Singapore, Sydney, Tokyo and New York. He has led highly-regulated financial institutions in Australia, Indonesia, Japan, Singapore and the UK, and is experienced in governance, regulatory matters and investigations.
Michael is a graduate of Harvard Law School (1989) and Tufts University (1985) and a 1985-86 Fulbright Scholar (Modern German Historiography, Bonn).
