Ankie Petersen works as a staff officer in cultural property protection at the Royal Dutch Armed Forces. She works in the Cultural Affairs and Information Section, part of the Civil-Military Cooperation Command (CIMIC), where she leads and coordinates efforts to implement cultural property protection (CPP) within the Dutch Armed Forces.
Her work involves designing training programmes and tools for the military, projects for the implementation of CPP in military planning processes, and engaging in civil-military collaboration projects for the advancement of CPP and the implementation of the 1954 Hague Convention on both the national and international stage. Furthermore, she is in charge of knowledge development on recent challenges related to culture, cultural heritage and (hybrid) conflicts.
Ankie Petersen has a background in critical heritage studies, with an MA in heritage studies and an MA in design cultures from the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and a BA in language and culture studies from Utrecht University. The relationship between culture, conflict and politics has always been a red thread running through her (academic and post-academic work). She previously worked for the Dutch National Commission to UNESCO as a policy coordinator in culture and heritage and as a lecturer in world heritage and conflict at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.
In her current capacity as a heritage professional (aside from her function as staff officer), she publishes internationally on heritage and politics (e.g. in The Routledge Companion to Italian Fascist Architecture, 2021), community participation and coordinates heritage management projects. For her efforts in the Dutch cultural heritage field, Ankie was awarded the 2021 Monument Talent Prize by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, a national prize for young professionals in the sector.
